Proposal - Senior Capstone Career Project
Student Name: Brandon Evans
Address: 807 Lower Burris Road
Home Phone: 404-771-3040
Teacher: Mrs. Baxter Date: 8/17/16
Directions: Describe your Product and respond to the following questions in as much detail as possible. All questions must be completed thoroughly to receive approval for your Product and Project.
1) Describe what you are proposing to do for your Product step-by-step and in detail.
For my senior project, I am proposing to build a cell phone detector by using a circuit board. This detector will illuminate when a cell phone in close proximity receives or transmits a signal in the form of an outgoing or incoming call. I will do research in order to determine what pieces of electrical equipment must be used in order to build the detector. I will obtain those pieces of equipment for the detector by visiting Allied Electronics. The detector will be put together from scratch, piece by piece using knowledge from research and the expertise of my facilitator.
2) What is your previous experience in this area of study?
My previous experience in this area of study is limited to only a few in school, simple labs. The most complex was the building of basic series and parallel circuits using very few pieces of equipment.
3) How is this Product a “learning stretch” and challenge for you?
As previously stated, my experience in this field is limited. So, I am unfamiliar with the purpose of certain key components in making a complex circuit. Thus, it will be a struggle at first to understand the nomenclature commonly used in this field of study.
4) How is this Product related to a career you are interested in possibly pursuing in the future?
The building of a cell phone detector is directly related to electrical engineering, which is a career I am seriously considering in pursuing.
5) How long do you expect it to take you to complete your Product?
I anticipate it taking me around fifteen hours to put all of the parts together on the circuit board.
6) When and where will you work on your Product?
I will work on my project mostly at my house, but some of the construction of my project will be done at my facilitator’s house. I will construct the bulk of my project during one of the week long breaks during the school year.
7) What are your estimated costs for completing the Product, and how will you fund these costs?
I anticipate the cost of the device to be approximately $100. My parents will fund the costs.
8) What ideas do you have for finding a Project Facilitator?
To find a project facilitator, I will ask one of my teachers if they know someone with some experience in building circuits. If that fails, I will ask family members if they know someone with the same expertise.
9) What expertise does this person need to have in order to be beneficial to you and your project?
My facilitator needs to have a background in working on electronics or in the wiring of circuits. They do not need to necessarily work in that field now, but they must have adequate experience in that particular field.
10) What steps will you need to take before you begin work on your Product?
I must first learn the basics of what each piece of equipment does in a circuit by doing extensive research on each part. I will need to spend time browsing the internet looking for each part necessary to complete the product. Finally, I will work with my facilitator to bounce ideas off of to ensure that the product works like it is supposed to.
11) What concepts, skills, knowledge, career goals do you hope to attain upon completion of your Product?
I hope to gain a better understanding of how circuits work and the purpose of each part in a circuit. I hope to obtain knowledge that will help me in future endeavors that may require skills in electrical engineering. My wish is to feel fulfilled at the end, by making a functional product that has a purpose.
12) How will you demonstrate your Product for Presentation at Senior Boards?
I will demonstrate my product by placing the detector on a table next to a phone. I will then make a phone call on my cell phone, then the LED will light up demonstrating that a signal is coming out of the phone.
I hereby agree to complete the above stated Product in partial fulfillment of my Senior Capstone Career Project requirement. I understand that I will not be allowed to change my topic after the date shown in Appendix A. I understand that I must also obtain my parents’ or guardians’ permission on the proper form before this agreement is valid.
