My name is Brandon Evans, and I am a senior at Cherokee High School. One of my main goals at this point in my life is to continue my education to become an engineer. However, I am unsure of which field of engineering I would like to pursue. For my senior project, I chose to create a cell phone detector. Throughout this project, I had to use various aspects of electrical engineering in order for the circuit to work properly.
The overall topic of my research paper was centered on how different pieces of electrical equipment function in an electrical system. My paper showed the importance of a few key pieces in electrical systems. The pieces of equipment ranged from transformers all the way down to components in electrical circuits. Through researching these topics, I learned necessary pieces of information regarding the functionality of certain components in my cell phone detector. This background knowledge gained helped me understand the reasoning behind using resistors in one place in an electrical circuit and a capacitor in another place.
The product that I chose to create was a Cell Phone Signal Detector. This product was created on a circuit board by putting individual components into specific places in order for the circuit to work efficiently. If everything works properly, an LED bulb will flash when a cell phone transmits or receives a signal when it is very close to the circuit. This product relates extremely well to my research paper because the circuit incorporates some of the components mentioned in my research paper. When I first put the circuit together, the LED did not glow when I tried to make a phone call. Thus, I had to spend a few hours troubleshooting the circuit with the assistance of my facilitator. Once I got the LED to glow when I made a call, I felt a great sense of achievement.
The creation of an electronic circuit that functions properly made learn about the field of electrical engineering as a whole. I learned that most electrical circuits do not work correctly when initially put together. While troubleshooting the circuit in my facilitator’s engineering lab, I was able to see the work environment that some electrical engineers go to every day. Overall the field of engineering seems very interesting to me, but I am still unsure of what specific field I wish to pursue in my future. By gaining background knowledge through the completion of my senior project, I will be able to make a better informed decision on which branch of engineering to choose.
Overall, the senior project was a great learning experience for me. I learned a lot about myself and my future. Thank you for taking time out of your day to view my project.
