Speaking of green technology, the key words that most people will think of are environmental-friendly, renewable and recycling. In the following project, we decide to make a solar cook which uses green materials as many as we can, and also try to emit less or even no pollutant during the cooking.
During the discussing period, we talked about the core ideas we may choose. Optical instruments are often used to focus light and heat, so we find out the principles of concave mirror and convex lens. The former one uses reflection to accumulate the light into one particular spot, while the latter uses refraction to accumulate. Also, aluminum foil is usually used in cooking, because of its ability to keep the heat. Aluminum foil reflects up to 98% of light and infrared heat. All the materials listed above are our first thought of the entire idea. It is necessary to point out the properties to set standards for our experiments, also to prevent experiment accident. As it is linked with sunlight and high temperature which is the cause of catching fire. Especially for aluminum.
We reckoned that we should apply something to keep it warm (use it as the appendix) at the surrounding verge of the model. As follows, we have determined three things------cotton, wood, vacuum body frame------that can be applied into it. Cotton has got a specific heat capacity of 0.072 KJ/(kg*K), while wood has got one between 0.4 and 0.5 KJ/(kg*K) (The number can stray above and below the range). Vacuum body frame is a kind of high-level technology which is widely used in heat-protecting products. So we tend to apply the vacuum body frame, while we have to admit that it is extremely difficult for us to provide a vacuum environment circumstance. Therefore, we may need to use cotton or/and wood instead.
About the base, we reached an agreement that we use metal as the base of the modal. So we research some relevant information about three normal alloys. Copper has got a melting point of 1083 degrees Celsius while the specific heat capacity is 0.39 KJ/(kg*K). Speaking of stainless steel 304, a kind of stainless steel which is the most widely-used, has a specific heat capacity of 0.5 KJ/(kg*K). Aluminum alloy is also mentioned, whose melting point is around 463-671 Celsius, while the specific heat capacity is 0.91 KJ/(kg*K)
We also find some tips for combining process. Before starting up, we should clean the dust or oxidation on the face of the metal. Sand or file the surface to rough it up and give the adhesive somewhere to grip to get a product with a little flexibility. During the process, we may use tools like a saw. However, this may be dangerous. To prevent things like it happen, we can use a riving knife or a splitter.
