My name is Blaine Phillips, I’m 18 years old and have been into trucks and cars all my life. My goals are to attend chat tech for welding and diesel mechanics. For my senior project I took my 1998 f150 and overhauled it, with a lift, wheels and tires and many other accessories to do with lighting and bumpers. I chose this topic because like I previously said automobiles strike my interest and especially highly modified ones. The idea of doing modifications to my very own is something I’ve wanted to do for years, but never been able to do.
I chose to write my paper on pretty much all that is required to do these modifications to a vehicle and what you need to expect. Modifications to vehicles like the ones I am performing are extremely popular these days and still fast growing. In the process of doing my project I had many obstacles to research and apply to my work. I had to look up certain parts, what parts would fit what and also how to do certain modifications that weren’t directly scaled out in the instructions the lift I put on came with. The instructions were very un-descriptive so much of my work involved trial and error and online research. I learned how to use tools in ways that they might not directly be made for and also to make sure in have everything I need before hand, trips to the AutoZone in the middle of the process take a lot of time that could be spent working away.
My product was my finished truck, I started off with a completely stock 1998 ford f150 that was in pretty rough shape. Over the months of doing this project I worked hard to earn the money to buy everything piece by piece and used my free time when not working to install them. As time went on my stock truck slowly became more and more built and looking better and better. The hardest part of the process to overcome for me was installing the front life of the truck. The instructions weren’t clear at all and left me with the possibility of installing it 4 different ways but only one would be correct and safe. It directly relates to my research paper because in my paper I talked about the obstacles and things I would need to have knowledge of and be able to overcome and upon starting the process I had to deal with those obstacles immediately
The whole concept of vehicle modification applies to my career because that is exactly want to do, though my truck I did the project on is gas and not diesel the concept behind the lift and body modifications are all completely identical. The next step for me is to learn more about getting into engine performance and build. Throughout the process of this project there was ups and downs but in the end it was fun for me and I would definitely do it for a living one day, so therefore this project was a success
My thoughts on the senior project vairy, I think it is an excellent way for highschool students to learn what path they would like to take in life. I also think it shouldn’t count as much, we have worked 4 long years to graduate, one project shouldn’t stop us from furthering ourselves into the world and getting a start into a career. I would like to thank the judges for their time and I appreciate them hearing what I have to say.
