I am a certified educator with current licenses in three states. I am seeking gainful employment in the areas of Biological Sciences, General Science, and health education or in the fields of pre-k education and Adult basic education. I have 30 plus years in the field and am sure my experience will more than adequately qualify me.
I am experienced in classroom instruction, laboratory assistance, and the tutorial field. I have a Bachelors of Science in Education degree from Jackson State University. My field of study was Biology Pre- Medical, with courses in Genetics, Microbiology, Marine Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physics. I later added Earth Science for teachers, which was added to the curriculum at that time. I completed research in Virology focusing on viral pathology and my senior seminar comprised of studying the session of life in pond water.
While in junior college I was the laboratory assistant and academic tutor of English and mathematics for the Academics Department, maintaining the zoology, botany and chemistry laboratories as a participant in the work-study program.
My work experience includes employment as a science educator in the Holmes County School District from 2007 till 2009, Certified Biology teacher through Hinds Community College at Hinds Agricultural High School from December 2006 through May 2007, substitute teacher in Jackson Public Schools from August until December 2006. I was the certified Advanced Biology teaching Zoology, Botany Science skills and Reasoning, and social studies (psychology and sociology) instructor and acting ECO-LAB department chairman at Velma Jackson Magnet High School in the Madison County School District from August 2005 until June 2006. I was contracted to teach integrated science to eighth graders from August 2003 until June 2004 in the Jackson Public School District. I took a midyear contract in January 2003 till June 2003 in the Copiah County School District, taking the seventh and eighth grades integrated science positions.
I worked as a substitute teacher in the Jackson Public Schools in the High Schools pending my license re-certification in the fall of 2002. From July 1998 until June 2002, I was contracted in the Jackson Public School District as the Comprehensive Health Educator and assistant coach of girl’s sports. From October 1997 until April 1998, I taught adult basic education teaching reading, mathematics, science and social studies at the Mississippi Job Corp Center. In the fall of 1996, I began teaching seventh and eighth grade science in the Hinds County School District in limited services capacity pending my license renewal.
In October 1980 I began working as a resource teacher at the Brushy Creek Head Start center In Georgetown, Copiah County, Mississippi teaching 5 and 6 years old children. That year I also started my own business as an independent contractor of interior decoration with Home Interior and Gifts Incorporated which I held until 1986. In April 1983 I took the National Teacher’s Examination scoring 507(WCET) and 570(03BIO and GEN SCIENCE) and in the fall of 1983, I re-enrolled in Jackson State University and completed the requirements for my Bachelors of Science in Education and licensure as an Educator. I completed my practicum in the spring of 1984 and received certification in July of 1984 and was hired as the biology and general science instructor in October after a brief probation period. At the end of the year administrative change left me without a position and I returned to the Head Start first as a substitute and later assigned to the four year old unit. I continued Head Start as a teacher facilitator until 1996.
Prior to college I worked for the Hazlehurst Park Commission as a recreation aide at the local swimming pool and community center in the Neighborhood Youth Corp summer youth employment program. I also participated in the Urban Cultural Development in the City of Chicago, Illinois the following summer. And in the fifth and sixth grades I washed dishes in the school cafeteria as payment for my lunch. As a child I traveled with my parents to Illinois and Michigan and worked as a laborer in the fruit farms and orchards and labored in the local farm industry in Mississippi.
