Wise, Connie Neville, age 85, previously of Dothan, AL and more recently of Birmingham, passed away on February 17, 2016. She was the daughter of James Alexander (“Buck”) and Marguerite Thompson Neville of Birmingham, AL. One of three children, she graduated from Phillips High School and attended Auburn University. After a period of overseas travel and employment at a local bank, Connie married Dr. Robert Harold Wise, a recent medical school graduate from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. They would remain married for 53 years, until Dr. Wise’s death in 2006.
After completion of medical training and service in the U.S. Air Force, the Wises moved to Dothan and made it their home for almost 50 years. Dr. Wise was a mainstay at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center (Dothan) until his retirement, serving the community as a gifted and compassionate physician. Connie was an accomplished homemaker who embraced the role of wife to Robert and mother to their four children. She had a unique ability to create a warm and welcoming home, so as the family grew to include grandchildren it was no surprise that they all loved to go to MomMom and Pappy’s house.
Throughout her adult life, Connie was a committed follower of Jesus Christ. She loved to share with others His message of salvation by grace, both through organized Bible studies as well as one-on-one relationships. Moreover, Connie was a powerful prayer warrior who spent countless hours lifting up family, friends and other needs that were on her heart. Her faithfulness in this regard is evidenced by hundreds of handwritten notes, recently discovered in her personal papers, reflecting specific concerns that she brought to the Lord over the years, as well as thanksgiving for answered prayers. Even as her health declined, Connie maintained a spirit of joy and thankfulness, as well as a selfless concern for others and a steadfast trust in the promises of her Savior.
Mrs. Wise is survived by her four children: Dr. Robert H. Wise, Jr. of Birmingham; Steven N. Wise (Barbara) of Nashville, TN; Mary Beth Wise McCrary (Dan) of Birmingham; and Melissa Wise Salem (Richie) of Birmingham. Her two brothers, James A. Neville, Jr. (Carole) of Tuscaloosa and Michael D. Neville of New York City, in-laws Ellis and Faye Wise of Elba, AL, thirteen grandchildren, and six great grandchildren also survive her. In addition, Connie leaves behind beloved nieces, nephews and friends, all of whom will greatly miss her gentle spirit, selfless compassion, and Godly wisdom.
The family would like to express love and appreciation to Pat Clements for her years of loyal and caring support, for both Dr. and Mrs. Wise. Their later years were greatly enriched by her efforts on their behalf, reflecting a committed and encouraging friendship that extended far beyond assistance with daily activities.
A memorial service honoring the life of Mrs. Wise will be held on Friday, February 26, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, preceded by a family visitation at 10:00 AM in the church parlor. A family graveside will later be held at the Fairview Baptist Church in Samson, AL, where Dr. Wise is buried. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be sent to First Presbyterian Church of Dothan, 3012 West Main Street, Dothan, AL 36305, or to the Biblical Marriage Institute, P.O. Box 59561, Birmingham, AL 35259.
