Judges Senior Project
Cherokee High School
930 Marietta Highway
Hello my name is Asa Pitts. When I graduate from Cherokee High School, I plan on attending Chattahoochee Technical College. My career aspirations are to be a Government teacher and coach one of the teams at the school I teach at. For my senior project I chose to study if POWER UP FOR 30 actually helps students stay focused in class. I chose this because I like exercise and I have always liked teaching people things.
Power Up For 30 is a program that is studying if kids exercising helps them stay focused in classroom. The program has schools take their student’s for 30 minutes a day. During these 30 minutes, a teacher introduces a fun game that keeps the students moving. Each school has a different time that this happens. At Liberty Elementary, since it is a large school, they have to separate grades by day. Mondays are for k-1st, Tuesdays are for 2nd, Wednesdays are for 3rd, Thursdays are for 4th (the group I am observing), and Fridays are for 5th. I learned that Power Up for 30 seems to work for the students at Liberty.
The teacher’s at Liberty Elementary allowed me to observe a Power Up For 30 session (I will have a video to show the session). I saw kids having fun, some not knowing they were working out their bodies. Later that day some teacher’s gave their students tests. I took that data and compared it to a day they did not have Power Up For 30 and took a test. I continued this data with my collaborating teacher. We repeated this process monthly so I could have enough data. My only obstacle was when kids did not show up.
Seeing the positive results of using exercise to help a student’s grades makes me want to become a teacher even more. Teaching a child that is ready to learn would make my life as a teacher much easier. The Power Up For 30 program has shown me a strategy that all teachers can use. Movement in a classroom does not always mean something bad. I plan to have my students moving around as much as possible.
The Senior Capstone Career project turned out to be a positive experience for me. My hunger to be a teacher has grown. Thank you so much for your time and patience.
