Mission Outreach Project
The Women’s Missionary Society and The Young People’s & Children’s Division have always been at the forefront of Mission Outreach. Within the 5th District, we have had incredible overwhelming response to our recent Mission Madness projects and would like to re-visit the Women’s “BRA” concept for this particular Mission Outreach Project. Each Conference will be encouraged to donate & bring NEW Bras of ALL colors and sizes (with price tags removed) to this Event. The goal is to receive at least 2000 new Bras. Tables and a selected Committee will be designated to receive the Bras during the Event. The Bras will be gift-wrapped & packaged during the Planning Meeting (as has been our previous custom).
We will identify and contact the appropriate Women’s Shelter and Domestic Violence Center to distribute the packaged Bras.
Scholastic Achievement Awards and Book Scholarships
The other focus for this Event is to present Scholastic Achievement Awards and Book Scholarships. This can be done by awarding Scholarships in various categories outside of the already established Handy Simmons Scholarship Award.
There is another very worthy Scholarship within the 5th Episcopal District to prayerfully be considered and awarded/presented during this Event (and every Annual event thereafter). This Scholarship has not been designed as of yet, but after much prayer, thought and consideration it will be officially named: “THE BESSIE M. HINES CHAUTAUQUA SCHOLARSHIP AWARD”. Mrs. Bessie M. Hines (wife of Retired AMEC Pastor, Rev. Dr. L. Fisher Hines), was an active Missionary on all levels of the WMS for over 50 years, served as 5th Episcopal District YPD Director (1987-1995), was Conference YPD Director in every Conference in the 5th except 2 conferences, was the Original Architect of the “Matriculation to Christian Living Pageant” on the District level where she successfully raised & awarded more than $126,000 in Scholarships for Young People during her 8 year tenure and went on to move that pageant to the Connectional YPD level. Mama Bessie as she was known by everyone, taught and encouraged YPD’ers to always give their “highest form of praise” in worship, in leadership, in service. Whenever there was an opportunity to lift up The Chautauqua…you knew Mama Bessie and the YPD’ers of the Fabulous Favored Fifth District was in The House leading the Highest Form of Praise!! At the time of Mama Bessie’s passing, July 9, 2015, she was serving as 5th Episcopal District Life Member Chairperson. The Connectional YPD Quadrennial Convention stood in moments of silence in Honor and Memory of Mama Bessie at the Quadrennial Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, July 2015.
It is with that same Honor and Memory that we wish to dedicate and name this Scholarship Award on her behalf and ask that it be included in this District affair. The Scholarship will be awarded to the properly vetted graduating High School Senior who has met all the necessary criteria and has been accepted and enrolled in an accredited US College/University or Accelerated Professional Business School.
We have already sought out the Members of The Hines Family to seek counsel and their blessing regarding this matter. They are behind this scholarship endeavor 1000%.

The mystique of the Ball is “who is behind that beautiful mask”. Patrons will be encouraged to wear masks of all kinds including Mardi Gras, Venetian, Feathered, Carnival, etc. There will be a Masquerade Mask Contest based on creativity and overall design detail for those Men, Women and Young People who choose to participate in the contest. Prizes will be awarded to the Most Creatively Stunning Mask.
Catered Food Tastings ~ Dessert Station ~ Signature Drinks
The latest trend in Meeting and Special Events suggests moving away from stuffy sit down plated luncheons and banquets into more sophisticate world class Food Tastings/Samplings known as “Bites” with a complete Dessert Station and Signature Drinks including the “Purple Masquerade”
Live Music and Entertainment
Within the fabulous 5th Episcopal District, we have some amazingly talented individuals in and around our Churches and the Entertainment industry. It would not be difficult to vet a Live Jazz Band, a Comedian MC, Professional Carnival Dancers, Vocal Performance Artists and give our young people an opportunity to showcase their original Spoken Word Artistry through Music, Sign Language and a Choreographed Masquerade Ballroom Waltz.
To make an Event of this magnitude happen, we will need CORPORATE SPONSORSHIPS. We will need to begin forming an immediate committee of Professional “Movers & Shakers” for Resources in varied industries as well as Grant Writers to solicit the sponsorships/partnerships needed for the Event Budget and to cover the “upfront anticipated costs” to pay for every aspect of this event.
\ The 5th Episcopal District Women’s Missionary Society
In conjunction with our dynamic new leadership, Bishop Clement W. Fugh & Supervisor Alexia B. Fugh, the District WMS along with the District YPD will coordinate and spearhead this Event, however, we will encourage and expect every Organization of the District to assist in hosting & attending this affair…The Lay Organization, the Women In Ministry, the Ministerial Alliances, The Clergy Family Organization, The Presiding Elder’s Council, The Department of Christian Education and all Church Congregations. We will also extend Invitations to the Civic, Political and Community Organizations of Greater Los Angeles.
5th District Annual Event
As previously indicated, there are two (2) purposes for this Event…
Scholastic Achievement Awards
We have discovered in previous years, people of the 5th Episcopal District of the AME Church, as well as the Community at large will come out and fully support ANY Event that gives back to the COMMUNITY and gives out SCHOLARSHIPS to Young People. While this can be the 1st of many Annual Events, whatever City our District Planning Meeting is scheduled to be---we can envision the THEME of the Event changing from year to year as to “stay on trend and move with the times”, but the PURPOSE of the Event will stay the same. We have already envisioned another year’s Theme being the “FIRE & ICE BALL”. Another year’s Theme being the “PINK & PURPLE BALL”. The possibilities are limitless and involves creative imagination!! With the RIGHT Team of Talented, Resourced people within the district assembled to coordinate & execute these “on trend” Events…
There is NO SECRET What God Can and Will Do To Make Every Auspicious Occasion Exciting and Memorable in the Fabulous Favored 5th!!!!

Church change agents in whatever City and Community we are meeting in by creating our own personalized hashtag event campaign. Every A.M.E. Church, every Organization on every level across the 5th Episcopal District can get involved with this process simply by posting, engaging and encouraging social media conversations about this event.
