Today I began my project by deciding that I am going to make a racing game, and I took the first steps towards creating the game. I added checkpoints which make sure the car knows where to go and keeps track of progress.
Even starting this project was a hassle because I am not familiar the game creation engine, so almost every starter guide I could find was outdated and the engine was lacking in the older features because it has updated them to newer ways, which I am unfamiliar with. I spent a lot of time figuring everything out, but in the end, it felt very satisfying to get the checkpoints working properly.
Showing my facilitator what I have accomplished so far after a long day of work. He seemed very impressed, and I ended up teaching him some things about the engine he never knew.
This is the checkpoint system, which determines if a checkpoint is cleared so the next one may be set, and makes the previous one invisible.
This is what the checkpoint looks like in-game. I just made it a red arrow which I can replace with a better graphic later. The box around the arrow is the area the car must pass through to trigger it.
This is what the checkpoints look like placed on the template track. Once I finish another map I can place them like this around the map.

Today I wrote the code that finishes the race when all the checkpoints are cleared, or resets all the checkpoints if there is more than one lap.
After today’s work the game functions, though it isn’t pretty or finished. The checkpoints are totally working and if you complete a lap it resets them all, but there is no ending set up to the game when you finish the laps. I’m very excited to finally be done with the bulk of the work on the coding portion of the project, and the final steps are creating a visual timer for the player, creating a map, and creating a start and end game screen.
I’ve just finished making the final function for today, and now the game should be playable.
This code will set the next checkpoint after the first is cleared, so that the player must go in order.
This is the function that checks if the number of laps cleared is the same as the number of laps that are required to end the game, and if they are equal the game ends, while if they are not equal all the checkpoints are reset for another lap.
Everything works, and I am able to successfully play my own game for the first time.

This afternoon, I ended up staying awake for a long time working on creating a map for the race. I finally made a map to replace the template map, even though it doesn’t look the best. I moved the map into the current project and all that I need to do now is place the checkpoints around the map like on the template.
Although the gaming engine is free, almost all textures cost a lot of money for just a few textures, but I found a free pack of mountain textures and made a simple circular map that I managed to bring into the project. I almost had a meltdown when I made a mistake moving the map into the project, because the project view screen went black and I couldn’t fix it until I restarted the engine. This map took hours to make even though it is simple and doesn’t look amazing. I am going to try to add another map later that uses the other free textures and objects such as trees and bushes. I also totally underestimated the size of the map, and it is much bigger than it looks.
This is the map I made and imported into the project. You can see at the bottom left all of the maps in the project including the template maps and the one I made. It is ready to have the car put on it with some checkpoints.
This is what the track looks like up close. It is a really simple design, but still took hours to complete because the free texture pack only had small rocks to use.
This is how large the map is relative to the checkpoints and car. Much bigger than I expected.ntary
