ALEXIS NAKOTA SIOUX NATION
BED BUG/COCKROACH/RED ANT
Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation is currently facing an epidemic of bed bugs, cockroaches and red ants in their homes. Around 75% of homes on the reserve are dealing with this issue and with no education on how to properly deal with this and no current type of funding to address this epidemic, it can only get worse.
The infestation of bed bugs can cause rashes and itchiness which can lead to infection from scratching so excessively that the skin breaks. In recent studies of bed bugs the physiological effects have been linked to mental health issues, depression, PTSD, and in rare cases suicide. Studies have found that people who have continuous bed bug infestations may suffer from the following:
Major depressive episodes
Anxiety spectrum disorders that may include acute stress disorders, adjustment disorders, specific phobias, and sleeplessness
These disorders may be new-onset or the result of worsening pre -existing conditions.
People may also suffer significant social isolation as well as self imposed social withdrawal.
In children the long term effects of living In these conditions can be detrimental to them emotionally, physically, and physiologically.
As there are already numerous factors that contribute to the living conditions on reserve this seems to be one of the biggest problems.
In order to lessen these effects especially on reserve there needs to be the following:
Public education about bed bugs
Education on the after care of their homes following fumigation
In extreme cases funding to support low income families where the infestation is so bad that they need to destroy everything they own in order to rid their homes of bed bugs.
Cockroaches can do the following:
Inoculation of disease causing bacteria can lead to urinary tract infections, digestive problems, and Sepsis
Cockroach bites can occur in some species
Invasions of body parts-they can enter your ear or nose while sleeping
Can cause food poisoning
Allergies- because of saliva secretion and body parts that contain hundreds of allergens which can trigger an undesirable reaction. People can suffer from skin rashes, sneezing, and watery eyes.
Asthma- cockroaches can be the worst enemy of asthmatic people especially if the home is infested with cockroaches. Also people who are not asthmatic may develop cockroach asthma by inhaling cockroach allergens.
Again education is the key after fumigation:
People will need to keep their homes clean
Ensure areas like the sink and countertop are clean before they go to sleep
Empty garbage at night
Don't leave open food out at night
Do not keep old newspapers, books and magazines stacked openly
Keep cockroach spray on hand so they can kill them instantly
Block all entrances where they think cockroaches are gaining entry into their home
Good sanitation should be practiced after fumigation to prevent further infestations.
3. RED ANTS
As with all First Nations money is an issue when it comes to epidemics such as these.
The following quote is for homes that require fumigation:
Regarding Bedbug and Cockroach treatments
- Bedbug treatment would be $550 per house
-Cockroach treatment would be $450 per house
-Bedbug AND Cockroach treatment $750 per house
For the house to treat for Ants as well it would be an extra $100 and to treat a house JUST for Ants it will $200
