The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) holds nursing practice accountable by assessing and measuring nursing care, comparing them to the standards and sharing the results of its findings, Luareate Education (2009). This is a tool hospitals can use to improve the quality of health care. 98% of Magnet recognized facilities and 2000 hospitals participate in National Database Nursing Quality Indicators, NDNQI (2016). NDNQI empowers nurses to structure planning and interventions for improvements in specific units based on Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) non-payment rule NDNQI (2016).
The U.S. Affordable Care Act was signed on March 23, 2013, Amin et.al (2014).
The Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid have created core measures to improve quality of care delivered to patients and also to achieve safe outcomes. These core measures are used to help prevent the Never Events.
A Never Event is an adverse event that is preventable and should never happen in health care Thornlow, (2009). Hospital reimbursement is now based on patient satisfaction and evidence-based quality measures. Hospitals get reduced on no reimbursement for Never Events. Core measures that are established based on studied outcomes help achieve higher awarded payments, by scoring higher on safety and patient satisfaction.
