Hello, I am a student at Etowah High School and my senior project was to build a robotic arm. I have always been intrigued with engineering and the medical world and that is how I found the career that has become my passion. That career is Biomedical engineering I plan of focusing on prosthetics but this field of science allows me to understand how all the interesting machines that run hospitals run and the new technology that is improving every day. I choose a robotic arm because it would give me a basis in robotics and engineering in general.
My paper was over the advancements and growth of Biomedical engineering. I discussed how from its beginnings in WW II to the ethics that have grown in the years and how it affects the cultivation of research and advancements in technology. What I learned from my research is that this field is constantly evolving as the need for the gap between technology and the medical field. The reason this field is constantly growing is because as technology advance there needs to be someone to apply it to help other from developing ways to increase the safety and efficiency of every process of the medical field.
My product relates to my paper in how it shows how the human body can be incorporated in how a machine work and vice versa. I say this because the way the arm is design is to simulate the joints that rotate a human arm to function the same way but with servo motors acting as the joints and my microcontroller and wires act as the brain and nervous system that send impulses to the joints to move. It also applies to how this design can be used as a template when making prosthetics and how they function.
This all culminates to wanting to understand how the artificial can intertwine with the organic. This product is the first step towards understanding how robotics works but it also allowed me to understand the basics of what I need for anything to do with engineering which is to learn problem solving skills. Biomedical engineering is a field that allows me to invest my time in something that can help others by understanding how people and technology function and how to find and solve problems within a system. What this project showed about myself is that while I can become frustrated my small seemingly unimportant issues every piece of a system develops on one another to be fully functioning.
Overall I think that the senior project is important for seniors because it helps them understand what they want to do as they progress to their post-secondary school. While the senior project may be a large hurdle for many it is a necessary evil to help devil skills that will help in the future.
