Judges, Senior Project
Cherokee High School
930 Marietta Hwy
My name is Andrew Hepler, and my choice for the senior project is rebuilding a deck. After I graduate from Cherokee High School, I will continue to further my education at Georgia Southern University. I plan on majoring in electrical engineering and hopefully find a job doing something I love. The reason I picked rebuilding a deck as my senior project is because I love figuring things out. I had to figure out how big every piece of wood needed to be and how long every nail or screw I needed to use. It is almost like solving a puzzle, it can get tough, but once you figure it out and put all the pieces together, there is nothing more accomplishing.
For my SCCP paper topic, I chose safety and safety regulations when it comes to a job site. I learned about what it means to ensure safety on a jobsite. There is always dangerous machinery around so it is best to take every precaution necessary. I also learned that there is certain codes that decks have to be built by. If they are not up to code and something happens, the person who built or rebuilt that deck will take full responsibility.
My product is making an old beat up deck look brand new again. The product relates to my research paper because I had to take every precaution to something that threatened my safety. Everything I built on that deck had to be nearly perfect to make sure it was up to code. The obstacle I overcame was the long hours spent rebuilding that deck, I would come home sore after long day of bending down and hauling heavy loads of lumber. It was all worth it end seeing the deck built the way it is supposed to be.
This project relates to what I want to do in the real world because I want to be able to build stuff. I want to put things together like I put pieces of wood together to build a deck. I plan on becoming an engineer after attending Georgia Southern and becoming an engineer requires a lot of thinking. Getting all the correct measurements for wood and putting every piece of wood where it needs to be requires a lot of problem solving just like an engineer.
I think the senior project is a great idea because it is a stepping stone into a much larger world of the careers we can choose from. Thank you all dearly for your time and I appreciate every one of you.
