The Development of Cameras Affects Photography
Cameras are extremely old and have changed in multiple ways. They used to be black and white, but not anymore. Cameras used to be big but now are small and more mobile. They even have cameras on smartphones now. People can now use them even in the dark. Also people can now edit photos. Due to the development of cameras throughout the years, photography has changed.
The first known cameras were black and white; now they take color pictures. Color has affected photography in many ways. Phillip N. Douglis stated, “Color plays a huge role in photographic communication. Yet, improperly used, it can obscure meaning” (52). Using color can affect a photograph in great and horrible ways depending on how it is used. There are several differences between color photographs and black and white photographs “The most obvious difference between color and black and white photography is that color can seem more real because it replicates vision” (Douglis 52). When pictures are in color, people can see more detail in the photograph. Also, photography has changed due to the fact that cameras are smaller than they once were.
Older cameras were bigger than today’s, which means they were harder to carry around. Today’s cameras tend to be noticeably smaller; “The new trend is shrinking the size and weight of video cameras without sacrificing their capabilities” (Fantel). One of the billions of smaller cameras out there is called the CKC 020. The New York Times states, “Measuring only about 5 by 5 by 8 inches, it fits comfortably into the hand, and its uncommonly light weight of 2.2 pounds makes it easy to keep steady without the aid of a tripod” (Fantel). With the use of these smaller cameras there is no reason to need a tripod anymore. If someone has a smart phone they carry a camera everywhere it goes.
Most people now have a smart phone, which means more pictures are taken “You are likely to take more pictures” (Mobile Snaps 59). With more pictures being taken, photography has changed forever. The Economist reports, “These could change the nature of photography entirely” (Mobile Snaps 59). Now that almost everyone carries a smartphone, a lot has changed. Not only can cameras take beautiful pictures in the light but also in the dark.
Taking pictures in the dark used to be impossible, but now cameras have the flash feature. The flash gives off a flash of light that brightens the picture. It all started with powder called flash powder. When the mixture is ignited, it burns extremely quickly, producing a bright flash that can be captured on film (Archambault). Now people currently use something called the LED flash; “Current smartphones use LED flashes as a source of light when photographing in low light conditions” (Archambault). The LED flash is not only on smartphones, but also on cameras. There has been a new feature added to cameras called editing.
Cameras have added a new feature called editing, which involves cropping, framing, resizing and other amazing actions. It is now important to edit pictures; “Every digital photo needs basic editing such as cropping, resizing, adjusting brightness and/or contrast and sharpening” (Bjork). Cameras are automatically fixing the image when a picture is taken now. For example, “A camera may even automatically fix red-eye that so often appears when using a flash” (Bjork). Photo editing has become a popular effect in photography. The development in cameras has changed photography in incredible ways.
When comparing old cameras to new cameras, there is a huge difference. Now cameras have color pictures, which tend to be more realistic. They used to be huge but now they are small and extra mobile. Now they are also handheld and built into any smartphone, and it can carry them around anywhere. They have invented the flash, which helps with taking pictures in low light or no light. Photo editing is now a great feature added to cameras. Photography has changed recently due to the technological development of the camera.
