What is a debate:
A respectful and constructive, yet controversial discussion of a topic with 2 or more people
You should be able to:
Listen to and analyze an argument, then ask a thoughtful, related question
Say your opinion carefully, with evidence
Provide feedback that is reflective
Create connections between concepts and opinions
Keeps conversation going
Can engage previous questions or ask opinions of speakers
Monitors time is used fairly by speakers
Writes mind map of where the discussion goes
How to speak in a debate:
Introduction – your message and it’s importance
Evidence – pieces of proof to support your message
Your main argument - why it will be successful
Refute - acknowledge your opposition, then challenge their opinion
Conclusion – summarize your main points and give advice on what you want your audience to do or think
Use colourful language, add metaphors and rhetoric
Memorize facts, so they are easier to recall
Remove filler language, like “uhm, uh” and replace with silence
Speak dramatically, use hand gesture, facial expressions and emotions
Take a deep breath before you rebuttle
If you feel realllllly keen, master skills of persuasion through pathos, logos and ethos (read about this on your own!)
Times I will interupt a debate:
The statement is be rude or offensive
The information is not true
The individual is being challenged, not the opinion
Enough time has passed, the discussion should move forward
Should smoking be banned in all restaurants in China?
Should corporations take more responsibility in protecting the environment?
Should the government take more responsibility in protecting the environment?
Should all energy forms be changed to renewable energy before the next 5 years?
Should farmers be held accountable for their use of pesticides on their farms?
Should their be laws in other countries (besides China) to control the human population?
Should humans interfere in an ecosystem? For instance, an invasive species takes over an area, should humans deal with the invasive species?
Is the Greenhouse Effect because of humans or other phenomena?
Should environmental crimes committed by companies be held responsible just by the people who committed the crime or the whole company?
Should environmental law become a priority for countries?
If a foreign company is found to be committing environmental crimes on another countries land, should their crimes be treated more or less serious than a local company?
If an American company pollutes in another country, should American people be responsible for the company’s crimes?
If a corporation is found to have polluted an ecosystem for a long time, but is no longer there, should the company be responsible for things that happened to that ecosystem?
Should individual people be punished more seriously for polluting? Example: throwing cigarettes on the ground, leaving your car engine on without driving it.
China had promised at the G20 summit to start reducing its pollution by 2030, should that date be earlier?
