Journey: Gaming meets American Sign Language and Poetry Overview When people hear "game-based learning," they typi- cally think of games designed to educate for a specific content area. Our approach looks at the use of games a little differently: What if educators explored deeper into the world of gaming and used games originally designed for enter- tainment to foster interdisciplinary and blended learn- ing? Could a video game really incorporate the learning of ASL, poetry, literature and STEM thinking? The PS3 (PS4) game Journey, developed by That Game Company provides the perfect experience for students to explore themes of personal life passage, culture and apply those themes to learning. This unit blends con- tent in literature, poetry, ASL, communication, com- plex geometry, Spanish culture, art, STEM thinking and more! Journey and Gaming Research Researching Gaming and Reflection on Gameplay: Students work in pairs to document the experience of playing Journey Students read research article “Eight Ways Video- games Generate Emotion” by Jonathan Frome Students incorporate research about how design- ers utilize emotions in game design by producing SWAY portfolios and analyzing how game design of emotions represents everyday emotions and com- munication. ASL ABC story and Culture Office Mix: Students apply learning about communication to other cultures, e.g. the Deaf Culture Students learn basic ASL fingerspelling and learn how to create an ABC story in sign language. Students utilize sign language to communicate in a different language and also learn the advantages of communi- cating visually as compared to using auditory com- munication Students create ABC stories in sign based off the narrative they developed from playing Journey. The Alchemist By Paulo Coelho “Alchemist: The Game” Project After experience playing Journey, students read "The Al- chemist" by Paulo Coelho in book clubs. After reading, stu- dents are challenged to design a video game that fits the theme of the book and includes the elements of the story found in The Alchemist. Students design their own video game version of the book either by creating a design pitch in Sway or by developing their game idea in Minecraft. Alchemist Visual Design in VR using Googles Tilt Brush Tilt Brush allows students to create an art piece in a virtual reali- ty space. Students use themes and elements from The Alchemist and the poem “Journey” to create a visual design art piece that can be showcased using virtual reality. The Alhambra and Geometric Design Islamic design Tessellation project and study of Spanish Culture Students begin this project by researching both Islamic design and Spanish culture They then take a virtual 360°walking tour of The Alhambra in Spain, further introducing the use of tessellations in Islamic design. During math they begin learning the math behind creating complex geo- metric tessellations. The culminating project— incorporating math, culture and design— is an original Islamic design tessellation art piece in an Office Mix video presenta- tion Alhambra STE(A)M Arch As a full class, the students are challenged to collaborate to build an arch the height of the tallest person in the classroom using recycled material. Students study famous arches looking both at the artistic design and the math behind arch architecture.
