If I am writing this essay, it is because my behavior has been unacceptable for a fourth grade classroom. In the fourth grade I am old enough and mature enough to show responsibility, stay on task, and listen to instruction.
Showing responsibility means that I have to make decisions. I have to make decisions about my behavior not only towards myself, but towards my fellow students and friends as well. I have to make good decisions as to when I should participate, when I should listen, when I should be a good friend, when I should walk away, when I should speak up, and when I should stay silent. I have to take responsibility for my actions because they affect more than just me, they affect those around me. I always want to act responsibly.
Staying on task is one of the most important things we do in the fourth grade. Many times my teacher will instruct, and then she will ask if there are questions, then she will ask some students to work independently because she needs to work with other students. If I am one of the independent workers, then I know my job is to do my assignment and not talk or bother a neighbor, not daydream, not sit and do nothing, not write a note, not do something else. My job is to do the assignment I was given and do it correctly and quietly. If I finish the job I can always read, because independent reading helps me in every subject. Staying on task is very important. Students who talk during independent work time sometimes end up writing this essay.
Listening to the teacher is the most important thing that I will ever do in school, whether in elementary school, middle school, high school or college. I must always listen to what the teacher is instructing or saying. If I don’t understand something I must always raise my hand and ask questions. This is how my teacher knows I am listening. In life, I will need to listen to my parents, my loved ones, my boss, my husband or wife, my kids. And they will need to listen to me. If I ever want people to listen to my words, I need to become a good listener myself. Listening is the most important thing a person can do in this life. Good listening takes practice.
By writing this essay I am reminding myself that it is very important in the fourth grade to act responsibly, stay on task, and be a good listener. I will do these things in the future so I can avoid having to write this essay again.
