Use the template on the last page to create a rocket that can be launched with a drinking straw.
Straw Rockets NAME: ____________________________
Straw rocket handout (last page)
1 drinking straw
Cut out and assemble the rocket according to the directions on the Straw Rocket handout. Use a pencil as a guide for making the rocket tube the correct size. 1 per group.
Remove the pencil and replace it with the drinking straw.
Choose one person to launch the rocket. That person should place the straw in his/her mouth and exhale to launch it as far as possible. Record data.
Repeat Step 3 twice more.
Calculate the average distance achieved.
Sketch your first straw rocket design (sideways) and label any parts you know.
Fill in the table for your 3 attempts with the first design.
Calculate the average distance from your 3 launch attempts. Show all of your work.
List at least 3 experimental errors that may have resulted in different distances achieved with the same rocket.
Given more time, what other modifications (non-powered) do you think might help?
If we wanted to launch a larger paper rocket, what other materials would you need? What could you replace the straw with? Do you think it would travel farther or not?
